History of Africare in Ethiopia:
Africare began assisting Ethiopia in 1976. The first assistance was a small irrigation project for nomads at the Wabi Shabelle Settlement Scheme. During the severe drought of the mid-1980s, Africare was a leader in the worldwide effort to provide emergency water supplies as well as food and medical relief. A wide range of self-help development projects — from food security to water resource development, from child survival to HIV prevention — followed throughout the 1990s and into 2005.
