Water

Since Africare's founding in 1970, we have prioritized water resource development and, as a result, significantly increased water supplies Africa-wide.

  • Wells and boreholes
  • Dams
  • Rainwater catchment
  • Reservoirs
  • Trenches and pipes
  • Pumps
  • Spring caps (protected springs)
  • Large-scale irrigation systems
  • Hand washing facilities
  • Sanitation training and hygiene education

Africare has supported the construction or improvement of all of those water delivery methods, both singly and in combinations, both small and large in scope. Apart from providing community water and hygiene facilities, Africa programs also targets schools and health clinics. New irrigation systems have enabled farmers to grow more food. Village wells have offered convenient water supplies ― where, before, the nearest source had been miles away. Sanitation projects have reduced water-borne disease on a continent where half the people have only unsafe water to drink. And more. For as the saying goes, "Water is life."

Africare is a member of Millennium Water Alliance, a coalition of U.S.-based humanitarian and faith-based non-governmental organizations formed to help needy communities in the developing world gain access to safe water and sanitation.
