Success in Tanzania

“My child is HIV negative. I am happy because my dream to have an HIV negative child has become true.”
– Zainabu, KAYA CCI participant

Zainabu is 33 years of age and the mother of five children, earning her living through small-scale agriculture. She is also HIV positive. Her husband abandoned her to marry another woman once her HIV status was revealed.

After her positive test, Africare’s KAYA Community Care Initiative (CCI) helped Zainabu’s local hospital link her to HIV home-based care (HBC) services. Zainabu met her HBC provider, Mwahija, who told her that living with HIV did not mean her life was over, and Zainabu quickly saw the rewards of “living positively” and adhering to her life-saving anti-retroviral therapy. “I really thank my HBC provider for the support that she has been providing to me since 2012. My child is HIV negative. I am happy because my dream to have an HIV negative child has become true,” said Zainabu.

The KAYA CCI program supports HBC services in three regions of Tanzania: Manyara, Mara and Kagera. KAYA CCI has been funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention under PEPFAR.
